Back to basics cooking & gardening programmes

The Cook & Grow Project is based in Hawke's Bay and teaches back to basics home cooking and basic vegetable garden skills for ages 8 to 80 years. We aim to reinvigorate a love of both home cooking and home vegetable gardens. These skills are easy to learn in a nurturing and friendly environment, producing healthier more cost effective meals, through our no-fuss, no-frills, hands on teaching methods.

We currently run school holiday programmes every January, April, July and October.  During term time there are classes with local Salvation Army - meal on a shoestring; Colenso College Teen Parent Unit - how to feed baby without having to open a bottle or a can and Acorn Project Hawke's Bay, teaching healthy tasty meals to young people living with cancer.

To quote the late Anthony Bourdain, “Basic cooking skills are a virtue… the ability to feed yourself and a few others with proficiency should be taught to every young man and woman as a fundamental skill. [It’s] as vital to growing up as learning to wipe one’s own bum, cross the street by oneself, or be trusted with money.”

We've lost 2-3 generations of home cooks and gardeners, the world over, and it's time to bring them back.
